Objective - To enable SME's and large corporate organisations alike to consistently produce high quality products.Scope - To provide the basis of achievable standards, throughout manufacturing service and repair organisations, that are internationally recognised.Introduction - In the late 1980's early 1990's it was predicted that all electronic manufacturing would be fully automated with the need for manual assembly standards being 'surplus to requirements'. This so called 'industrial revolution' has happened in some product manufacturing eg mobile phones and computers, but has not happened in equipments that involve electromechanical assemblies and heavy components. It has also not applied to a high percentage of SME's due to the lack of funds to invest in mass production techniques - even more applicable at the time of a recession.SME's also score over large organisations when it comet flexibility of products and services to meet individual customer/market requirements. It follows that, for the foreseeable future, there will continue to be a need to control standards of manufacture, repair and servicing requiring manual operations. The Workmanship Standards Manual was first published in 1986 and, now in its fourth edition continues to provide invaluable help and guidance to a diverse clientele that is now becoming more and more global.Book Analysis - The book breaks down into ten sections with descriptions in each section supported by diagrams illustrating the relevant points i.e. descriptive and visual. Briefly looking at each section we have:Section 1 - covers all aspects of equipment and sub-assembly wiring from colour codes through routing of wires - damage to wires - various connection techniques and on to ribbon cables and cubicle wiring. Each area covered in a practical, straightforward manner.Section 2 - Covers all aspects of assembly of electrical and electronic components showing accepted techniques and standards. The section covers general assembly of discrete components including static precautions to be adopted.Section 3 - Identifies methods of assembly of mechanical components and types of fixings.Section 4 - A must for all manufacturers of electronic and electrical sub-assemblies and equipment - soldering techniques. One of the main causes of equipment failure is bad soldering techniques eg 'dry joints', bridged soldering etc. This section pays minute attention to the needs and techniques required to ensure good quality and reliability.Section 5 - A brief introduction to solvent outlining Health and Safety problems with solvents used in the cleaning processes in the electrical and electronic industries.Book Analysis (Cont'd)Section 6 - The use of adhesives may not be of top priority but, nonetheless, their appropriate and safe us is most important.Section 7 - Refers to the systems and methods recommended to ensure that any rework or repairs to equipment, in particular printed circuit boards, are carried out in a professional manner. NB Repairs must not reduce the reliability of performance of the equipment and, as far as possible spoil the cosmetic appearance of the equipment. This applies in particular to external paint or plating finishes.Section 8 - Defect Classification. A simple but essential tool in the hands of production and quality control to give correct feedback to assembly staff to enable them to understand the reason(s) for not accepting a sub-assembly or equipment.Section 9 - Outline the basic components and controls that make up an effective Quality Management System (QMS) followed by some sample forms for either use as is or change them to suit individual company systems and controls.Section 10 - Endeavours to define the terminology abbreviations and symbols used in the WSM and in general use with electronic and electrical manufacturing companies.
